Meddlers or Mediators? – Prof. Gilbert Khadiagala

Prof. Gilbert Khadiagala is the Jan Smuts Professor of International Relations and Head of Department of International Relations at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

In addition to supervising post-graduate students, he teaches courses on Africa’s international relations, conflict resolution in Africa, political economy of African development, international relations of Africa’s natural resources, and ideas in development. He studied Political Science in Kenya, Canada, and the United States, obtaining his doctorate at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Washington DC. He has authored and edited 11 books and monographs, including Allies in Adversity: The Frontline States in Southern Africa Security (1994); Meddlers or Mediators? African Interveners in Civil Conflicts (2008); Sudan: The Elusive Quest for Peace, with Ruth Iyob (2006), Security Dynamics in Africa’s Great Lakes Region (2006); Conflict Management and African Politics: Ripeness, Bargaining, and Mediation, with Terrence Lyons (2008) and African Foreign Policies: Power and Process, with Terrence Lyons (2001). The interview was conducted in Paris and Johannesburg between June and November 2011.
